Food Packaging Equipment and Machinery

There is perhaps no greater variation of machinery in any industry than that for food packaging equipment. Food products are packaged in bags, cans, bottles, boxes or filled hot, cold, frozen, and dried or with particulates, or just liquids, vacuum sealed, or any number of different treatments to keep foods fresh and convenient for use
Variety of Packaged Foods
As seen in the picture above the types of packaging machinery are as varied the products you will see on the grocery shelves. Not seen here are many other types of packaging you will see in the deli-departments such as vacuum packed luncheon meats, frozen foods or packaging in cups.
If you have a new food packaging project to discuss, please give Busch Machinery a call.  We cannot possibly put everything we carry on our site, so if you don't see what you are looking for, please call.

Band Sealers for Pouches and Bags

Band Sealers are used to seal premade bags and pouches after loading the contents which can be most any product found in a bag from catalogs to lotions. These bag sealers are made in horizontal and vertical configurations based on the types of products that are being packaged and sealed.  All of the single side sealing machines include printing for date or lot codes and are offered in both tabletop and freestanding versions. Two sided heat sealing machines are used for heavier duty bag sealing requirements on bags up to 150 pounds but do not have printers.

Horizontal Bag Sealers

Horizonal Bag Sealers are best utilized for products that will not spill out the contents such as electronic boards, catalogs, CD's, trayed cookies, and many other products.

Carton Sealers | Carton Sealing Machines | Carton Sealing Equipment

Carton Sealing Equipment: Uniform Carton Sealers are used in production environments where a run of the same sized cartons is made, then changed over for the next sized box. Random carton sealing machines are used primarily in order picking operations where the size of the box changes with every order, requiring a carton sealer that can automatically adjust to different sizes on demand. An automatic carton sealing machine folds all of the top flaps prior to sealing whereas a semi-automatic carton sealer requires the operator to close the flaps prior to insertion into carton sealer. After sealing the center line of the box another type of machine called an edge sealer can be added to tape the four edges of the box to make what is known as an "H" seal.
The overwhelming majority of our carton sealer sales use tape to seal the boxes.  However other options such as stapling or hot melt gluing are also available.

Uniform Carton Sealing Machines

Carton Sealers are manufactured in a variety of configurations suitable for your needs.  Uniform carton sealers are the most commonly used on production lines since each carton is the same size as the previous carton. These carton sealers change over very easily from one size to another in a matter of a couple minutes and are available in automatic and semi-automatic versions.

Random Carton Sealing Equipment

Random Carton Sealers are ideal for order picking operations where the size of the carton varies from carton to carton. These carton sealers automatically adjust to the size of each carton as it is presented. They are available in Semi-Automatic and Automatic versions.  Random carton sealers run much slower and cost a lot more than Uniform carton sealers because of the extra mechanisms that adjust the machine individually for each carton.

Customized Carton Sealing Equipment

Many applications exist that are outside of the specifications of our standard carton sealing machines.  Changes required could be as simple as requiring stapling or hot melt application. Others requiring larger or smaller box handling. You might also need higher speeds or ability to handle thicker double corrugate.
Busch Machinery can help you with your customized carton sealing needs.  Just give us a call and we will be happy to discuss your application.

Carton Erectors

While most of our carton sealers can do top and bottom sealing, it is common for many plants to have a carton erector that opens and bottom seals the box prior to the carton packing operations which can be either hand loaded or automatically packed. In those instances carton sealers only perform the final top sealing.
Carton erectors can be automatic or semi-automatic.

Neck Banding Machine

Neck Banding Machines are known as shrink sleevers, shrink banders, tamper evident banders, neck banders, and, as some machines are capable of both, full body sleevers or shrink labels. No matter what the name, neck banders convert lay flat tube roll stock into a shrink band by opening and re-creasing the tube stock so that it opens easier. The tube stock is then drawn back flat 90 degrees to its original position through the drive rollers and then is cut in any of several ways.  Some machines cut after the film has been forced over the product by a V knife. Others may cut while the stock is still flat while being held by vacuum cups, and our high speed machines use a group of circular cutters located outside the mandrel after the band has been fed onto the product. Circular cutters work so fast that speeds of over 250 bottles per minute are possible on a single head.

Full Body Sleeve Applicator

Improvements in printing technology are making full body sleeves (shrink banding) a more viable option for many products, especially for any unusual shaped container. A full body sleeve applicator works by opening, cutting and applying a tube stock material that lies flat on the roll. Obviously the cut point is determined by a registration mark on the printed tube.

The tube stock is made either of two ways: extruded or seamed.  Extruded stock has no overlap material, thus no seam.

Full Body Sleeve Applicators can also be used to apply neck bands also known as shrink banding.

After application the material is shrunk onto the container by use of a heat tunnel or steam tunnel.  Steam tunnels are utilized for high speed lines or when the shrink parameters need to be precise.

Our experts can help you determine if a full body sleeve applicator is right for you..

Coding, Printing and Marking Systems

Today's modern packaging environment offers a number of choices for marking, coding and printing lot codes, barcodes, 2D codes, serial numbers, and contents in the form of labels or direct printing on manufactured products, the packaging that contains them and the final box and pallet labeling or marking to identify a shipment. All of this is accomplished by the utilization of industrial ink jet coders, hot stamp coders, label printers, and combination print and apply equipment. In this regard the modernization of the packaging machinery industry is the most evident compared to the days when all marking was by contact or stencil.

Industrial Ink Jet Coder

One aspect of industrial inkjet printers that is the same for all types is that they all depend on a product moving in front of the printhead in a constant motion, since the printhead is basically noting more that a vertical line of nozzles that turn on and off at very high speeds as the product passes in front of it, thus producing the characters or image we wish to reproduce. But that similarity quickly vanishes because the three types of ink jet coders have vastly different capabilities in terms of speed, height, number of lines, and resolution of the characters and images. The differences are further delineated by the types of inks that can be run on the inkjet printing system which can limit its applicability depending on the substrate to be marked. In order to categorize the industrial ink jet coder further we divide the three types of inkjet coders, CIJ (continuous ink jet), DOD (drop on demand), and cartridge into two categories: Small Character ink jet coder and Large Character ink jet coder.

Electronic Component IDSmall Character Ink Jet Coder

While there is some blurring of these lines, at Busch Machinery we define a small character inkjet coder as being capable of printing at least two lines of information in a selectable font size down to at least 1/16" height, or one line up to 12 mm height (0.47") and has the capability of printing at least some versions of barcodes (most of our systems can also print 2D codes). CIJ ink jet coders are the best for virtually any application, but cartridge systems can work well on porous and semi-porous surfaces for much lower cost. (Click here to see our small character inkjet coders)

Large Character Ink Jet Coders

A Large Character Ink Jet Coder is defined a capable of printing a single line from 12 mm height to nearly 4 inches high on a single printhead (nearly 8" when doubled up). Beyond that there are two categories of large character inkjet printing: high resolution and low resolution.

High Resolution Large Character Ink Jet PrintingHigh Resolution Large Character Industrial Inkjet Printers

With the improvement in inks and inkjet technology it is now possible to print on corrugated and other large surfaces with 300 dpi resolution in wide swaths of up to 4" high on a single printhead, and up to 8" with dual printheads. Furthermore inks are available that allow printing on virtually any surface.  A great way to eliminate more expensive print and apply labeling systems with their higher initial and operating costs. Print text, graphics, and barcodes with 99.9% readability!

Low Resolution Large Character Industrial Ink Jet Printing

Low Resolution ExemplarLow Resolution Industrial Inkjet Printers are used for basic text only printing on corrugated or other large surfaces with one or two line print capability from 7 mm (about 7/32") to 60 mm (2.37"). In some systems these printheads can be mixed and matched with High Resolution Ink Jet Printers to complete your ink jet coding system.

Print and Apply Labeling Systems

Print and Apply ExemplarPrint and Apply labeling refers to systems that accept unprinted or partially pre-printed label roll stock and prints the variable data in either a direct print and apply or loose loop system tied into a label applicator. In either case a number of different configurations are available to apply the labels onto cartons, pallets, or products. In most production environments print and apply is still the preferred method for printing product information with barcodes.  However as ink jet printing continues to improve we suspect that more and more manufacturers will move away from the relatively high cost of operating print and apply systems to the more environmentally friendly industrial ink jet coders. Consider that the cost of the label is much higher than the cost of the ink to print the same information directly on the carton.  Add to that the cost of thermal transfer ribbons and the fact that ribbons and backing paper for the labels must be disposed of, and ink jet printing only becomes much more attractive both financially and environmentally.  Busch Machinery offers many versions of print and apply, but we urge all customers to at least consider ink jet coding as an alternative.

Hot Stamp CoderHot Stamp Coders

Hot stamp coders are mainly utilized on labeling equipment where a batch code or expiration (or both) can be printed directly on the label just prior to application to the product.  Hot stamp coders use metal type mounted onto what is called a type chase. When the chase is installed into the printer, it is heated. At the end of a label index cycle the type chase is driven by pressure into a hot foil tape which then dry transfers the code into the label. And while thermal transfer printers and ink jet coders can be used to print on labels, hot stamp coders still remain the most cost effective means of printing simple information such as expiration dates and/or batch codes.  However, if more sophisticated information is needed such as bar codes or 2D codes, ink jet coders and/or barcode printers are the best alternatives.

Call Today if you would like to discuss your application with our Sales Engineers.

Inkjet Coders

Ink jet coders are used for many coding and printing operations. There are two basic types of inkjet coders; Small character ink jet coders used for marking bottles with expiration dates and/or batch or lot numbers and Large character inkjet printers generally used to print product information on boxes.  There are now 300 dpi large character ink jet printers that can print barcodes directly on corrugated boxes with 99.7% readability.

We offer a full range of inkjet coders or ink jet printers starting as low as $895 all the way to our premium printers capable of 4 lines of small character printing.

Barcode Label Printers

Barcode label printers are thermal transfer printers that allow you to print labels with barcodes and graphics in addition to normal text. Several styles of barcode label printers are available ranging from tabletops to OEM print engines. Labels are designed from your computer using software that varies in sophistication from simple and free, to large database capable systems.  Additionally there are barcode label printers that can encode RFID information while printing the label.

While most of the barcode printer applications on this site utilize OEM print engines that are integrated into a labeling system (), many customers prefer to print their labels offline to apply labels by hand or to transfer the printed labels to an automated machine (requires rewind option).

Busch Machinery recommends Zebra for your barcode label printer needs as they have a wide range of choices to meet almost any need and offer the quality of product that meets our rigorous standards.

Hot Stamp Coders

Hot Stamp Coders are also known as Hot Foil Printers. Hot stamp coders work by pressing hot metal type into a dry hot foil tape that then transfers the ribbon pigment onto the label.  Most of our hot stamp coders work with air pressure, however our ADL-HSC is run electrically with a small motor.
Hot stamp coders are normally only used for expiration dates and/or lot or batch codes. If you have need for more variable information such as barcodes or serialized codes we recommend thermal transfer Barcode Printers.  Barcode printers are also available for integration with you labeler.
To change a code or expiration date on a hot stamp coder involves physically changing type characters or slugs. But with practice, this is really a pretty simple operation

Void Fill Machine

One of the big problems with peanuts, bubble wrap and other packaging materials is that although they are light, shipping is still expensive because the space it takes is largely air.  A Void Fill Machine reduces shipping costs since the material comes in roll form and is filled with air on site.  Void fill machinery makes air pillows from 2" to 10" wide.
Simply load the void fill machine with a roll of stock and make pillows on demand, while securing your products safely encased with air. Void fill machinery has a very fast payback for any operation that needs to safely secure their products.
