Cap Tightening Machinery and Cap Retorquing EquipmentCS-5200 Inline Cap Tightener

Inline Cap tightening machines are commonly used for multiple purposes.  For instance many specialty caps such as pump sprayers or trigger sprayers do not lend themselves easily to automatic sorting systems and are thus placed by hand onto the bottles. But production speeds are such that hand tightening is not an option.  A cap tightener fits nicely into this situation, with options such as trigger sprayer alignment also available.
Another use is for smaller operations that just don't quite have the resources to fully automate their capping system, but need to speed up beyond hand-held cap tightening devices.  In this case the operators simply start the caps as they run down the conveyor and the cap tightener does the rest.
A third use is for retorquing operations. Inductions sealers are commonly used in today's packaging environment for the dual purpose of tamper evident packaging and prevention of spillage during shipment or in the retail setting (liability). So while the cap may have originally been applied and tightened automatically, induction sealing tends to loosen the cap. So in this case a cap tightener backs up as a retorquer.
However, in some cases a higher degree of torque requirements are needed such as rejection of undertorqued caps and bottles.  This is where the CVC-1208 (Scroll down page) cap retorquer fits the bill, since it has the capability of obtaining a final torque readout and can initiate a rejection sequence when required torque is not reached.
Also available are hand-held cap tighteners and table top cap tightening machines. (Scroll to bottom of page).

Automatic Screw Capping Machines - Automatic Capping Machines

CAI-10 Premium Inline Automatic CapperBusch Machinery carries a full line of automatic screw capping machines including inline cappers, rotary chuck cappers, and ROPP capping machines. The biggest differences between inline screw cappers and chuck cappers is that generally speaking inline cappers are very flexible for running a wide range of caps (primarily what is known as flat caps) without need for change parts, whereas a chuck capper requires a chuck and bottle change part for every sized cap and bottle. However, chuck cappers deliver much more accurate torque, especially in the lowest and highest ranges of torque requirements. Also, since chuck cappers can be built in a rotary configuration, they are capable of much higher speeds than even the best inline cappers.  But with the addition of our new CAI-10  inline capper (pictured on the right) new innovations can now get pretty close to torque consistency of a chuck capper, when in comparable speed ranges. Still though, rotary chuck cappers are capable of speeds in excess of 600 bottles per minute on a large rotary system.

Inline Screw Capping Machinery

Inline Screw Cappers consist of two components: the base cap tightening unit and the cap sorting system with chute. When integrated together it becomes an automatic capper.

FlatCapFeeder VerticalWheelSorter Centrifuga lFeeder
Waterfall Style Feeder

Waterfall feeders are by far the most popular feeders for our automatic cappers because they serve as both sorter and cap elevator. With a floor level hopper to load caps from bulk, it is very easy to work with. However it is designed to work primarily with flat caps and depends on the closed end of the cap to be heavier than the rest of the cap which is not the case with all caps. If there is any doubt, we should test your caps to make sure they will run.
Works with caps from 8 - 110 mm diameter
Vertical Wheel Feeder

Vertical Wheel Feeders are a little less money than a waterfall type sorter but have a more limited size range 15-53 mm and can require additional sorting rings.
The biggest disadvantage of a vertical wheel sorter is that it is mounted on top of the tightening unit and therefore requires more ceiling height not only to clear but also to be able to load the hopper. Purchasers should also think about loading as someone has to get the hopper loaded via a ladder or platform.  Another option is to get a floor level transfer at additional cost..
Centrifugal Feeder

Centrifugal feeders can feed caps that will not work on waterfall or vertical wheel sorters, such as barrel caps and other specialty caps. Like a vertical wheel feeder it is mounted on top of the tightening unit so requires more ceiling height to have access to the feed hopper. However if you are running specialty caps, you really don't have much other choice as centrifugal feeders are the answer for the more difficult caps

Rotary Capper
Rotary Chuck Cappers
There are so many possible configurations of automatic rotary cappers that each one is made specifically for the application. Machines are made from 4 to 100 heads depending on your production requirments.
Chuck for capper
Example of a Capping Chuck for single head cappers through high speed rotary systems.
Chuck cappers offer very high torque accuracy and when combined into a rotary capping machine can cap at very high speeds. Most chuck cappers today use magnetic clutches which can be set very precisely.  But one should consider standardizing cap sizes for your products as each sized cap requires a chuck made for it. This can be quite expensive as the speed requirements increase with more capping heads.  It is not unusual to have 20 or more heads in a high speed system.  Furthermore changeover time can also increase substantially.  This is why it is critical to review your entire product line and speed requirements in detail when discussing your project with our sales engineers.

ROPP Capping Machines - ROPP Cappers

ROPP Capping Head Forms Threads to Conform to Bottle Threading from outside the shell
Many customers ask us what ROPP is and the simple answer is Roll On Pilfer Proof closure.  Simply put it is an unthreaded aluminum shell that is placed on and pressed down onto the bottle neck while thread forming wheels spin around the shell and press against it to conform to the existing threads of the bottle and locking ring. In many respects a ROPP capper resembles a chuck capper although since it is not torquing a cap there is no clutch mechanism required.  ROPP capping machines are available  as a single head to multiple head high speed rotary systems. The big advantage of a ROPP capper is that it is sealing the product at the same time it is providing tamper evident security. The big disadvantage is that it is expensive to run more than one size cap. The neck and threads of the bottle must also be hard enough to withstand the pressure required to form threads such as glass or hard plastic.

Automatic Rotary ROPP Capping Machine

ROPP Head in a Rotary Capper
Rotary ROPP capping equipment is available from 4 to as many heads as needed to meet the production requirements.  A ROPP rotary capping machine can be a stand-alone machine or integrated into a Dual-Modal or Tri-Modal filling, capping and rinsing monoblock.  We highly recommend sizing all bottle neck finishes that are planned to be filled be one size only as changeover times and cost of change parts increase with the size of the machine.
We highly recommend you call us to discuss your product and productions requirements to configure the best system for you.  Call 800-840-9573 (USA) or 520-777-3360 (Intl).

Oftentimes ROPP Cappers are incorporated into large monoblock systems for Rinsing, Filling and Capping
